How ABFRL Bangalore is going ‘Zero – Waste’

The Aditya Birla Group is a true pioneer of sustainable business practices in its operations. All companies under the group have brilliant sustainability goals that aim at creating significant environmental and social impact.

This is story of how one of such company, ABFRL, has partnered with SZW to achieve one of its ambitious, yet very essential sustainability goals.

Aditya Birla Fashion Retail Ltd. comprises popular fashion brands such as Pantaloons, Allen Solly, People, among others. As a part of the company’s 2020 vision, ABFRL has committed to sending zero waste to landfill from all their retail stores. And here’s where Saahas Zero Waste steps in.

Waste Management Partnership

Earlier this year, ABFRL partnered with SZW to create Zero – Waste fashion retail stores across all their brands. As the first step, a 2 – stage Pilot project was designed by SZW. To implement operations, SZW had brought on-board the SPOCs of all nine ABFRL brands.

Road to Zero – Waste: Pilot – I

Stage 1 of the Pilot comprised the collection & sustainably management of dry waste from 11 ABFRL stores in Bangalore. After devising an efficient solution design for the 11 stores, SZW successfully executed the pilot in January 2018, for a period of one month.

The pilot enabled SZW to gain useful insights into the on-ground challenges of the project. A structured SOP was devised by us on the basis of our learnings. Due to the success of the pilot, waste management operations, as a part of Stage 2 of the Pilot, were then scaled up to 104 ABFRL stores across Bangalore.

Road to Zero – Waste Pilot – II

SZW designed a cluster – based dry waste collection schedule for the 104 stores. All stores were divided into clusters on the basis of their geography – North, South, East & West Bangalore – and vehicles were to be deployed to each cluster network once a week. In this way, optimal utilization of the vehicle was guaranteed, which in turn ensured a cost-effective solution for ABFRL. This also ensures minimal GHG emissions from the pickup trucks.


Waste Management Impact

Since the start of operations, SZW has diverted 39,000 kgs of dry waste from 104 ABFRL stores, across 9 brands. All dry waste is either recycled or co-processed at authorized end destinations. Plastic hangers and covers, for example, are recycled to make plastic pellets, while discarded cardboards and paper are recycled to make fresh paper.

The SZW project at ABFRL project has also created a significant social impact.  The project has generated employment for 5 people at SZW – all of whom are from the BOP segment of the society.

For an organization to go zero waste, it must partner with the right facilitator, a zero-waste expert. What is even more important is for the organization, itself, to commit to going zero-waste.

ABFRL, through the Aditya Birla Group, has made this very necessary commitment.  Internal champions who, through their relentless enthusiasm, determination and efforts have begun to drive the company towards achieving their sustainability goals.
